the art of

cello

for those who live the cello life

ABOUT

US

If you are starting out as an adult cellist - then The Art of Cello is for you.  But it is also for anyone who is already on their journey as a cellist, young or less young.

I started the cello at 59. As an adult newcomer to the Cello, I researched many aspects of the instrument, and found all kinds of advice - some amazing, some not so useful but surprisingly, quite a few offered conflicting viewpoints. As a beginner, different opinions can be difficult to filter.

I remember I had all kinds of questions; knee grip, bow grip, straight/slanted cello hold, sit up/lean back, best strings, best set-up, end pin length/type, rosin - how  much is too much, tone quality, vibrato, shifting, thumb position....the list was endless.

In this website, I present what has worked for me. I provide resources that helped me a long the way but I encourage members to add their thoughts and their stories as I am sure everyone has a different journey.

Come and join us at The Art of Cello and together, let's build an amazing resource for cellists!

If you are interested in my work as an award winning composer, do visit my site here Nick Duggan.

Much of the music at The Art of Cello features the cello (of course!) and I will be posting frequently, sheet music, music, thoughts and much more.
